Late Season Sailfish Bite

Anglers fishing with me aboard the Reel Work out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida have been treated to a good late season sailfish bite this week. The sailfish usually move past Ft Lauderdale by early May in search of cooler waters to our north so this was a nice surprise for me and our anglers. Our anglers have also been catching a good number of sharks along with some mahi-mahi, blackfin tuna, king mackerel and bonito. I can’t predict how long the sailfish bite will last but I do expect the mahi, tuna, mackerel and bonito bite to be good through out the summer.

Fort Lauderdale Fishing Report 1/16/2011

Fishing has been pretty good for the past month or so. The sailfish have been biting fairly consistently on live bait. We have had some good days trolling and catching kingfish and a few mahi-mahi mixed in with them. There have also been some smaller blackfin tuna and a few bigger ones with both bonita and the occasional wahoo while trolling too. The sharks have been around and fishing for them should really start heating up in the next month or so. The amberjack and barracuda have been around some of the wrecks and reefs when the conditions have been right for them. All in all fishing has been pretty good and should be getting better as the season progresses. Well, that’s all for now, hope to see you soon.

Fort Lauderdale Fishing Report 12/12/10

The fishing has been pretty good the past month. The colder temperatures have been moving a lot of sailfish through the area. Every cold front has been pushing more sailfish south and the bite has been consistent. There have been some other fish mixed in while we have been fishing for sailfish. There have been some mahi-mahi, kingfish, a few blackfin tuna, and the occasional wahoo. There have also been a few amberjack and almaco jack around the wrecks. There have also been some spanish and cero mackerel on the inside reefs. There has been no real shortage of baitfish either. The ballyhoo have been all over the place on the first reef and the blue runners, speedo, and bullet bonita have been fairly easy to get as well. The fish are here and they have been biting all we need now is for you to come down and catch them. Well, that’s all for now, hope to see you soon.

Fort Lauderdale Fishing Report 11/17/10

Fishing has been pretty good lately. The sailfish and mahi have been biting pretty steady with the occasional kingfish mixed in live baiting on the kites. Trolling has been producing a few kingfish and mahi as well as some smaller blackfin tuna. Vermillion snapper season closed on the 1st of the month so nothing to report there. Wreck fishing has been a little slow lately but I am sure it will pick up again. The weather has been great and there are fish out there to be caught. That’s all for now, hope to see you soon.

Fort Lauderdale Fishing Report 8/3/2010

It has been another busy week and the fish are still biting. There has been a little bit of everything around from bait fish to game fish. Kingfish and bonita have made up the larger portion of what we are catching. There have also been some barracuda, a few blackfin tuna, and even a wahoo. Wreck fishing has been slower than normal but if we get some current moving it should improve. There have been a few boats further offshore getting some dolphin fish. We caught a big sandbar shark one morning but the small reef fish tore up our baits when we tried it the next time. Other than that, we saw a large pod of some kind of whale that I can’t remember seeing before. The weather has been beautiful and with the fish biting, it has been a good week to be out there. Well, that’s all for now. Hope to see you soon.

Fort Lauderdale Fishing Report 6/26/10

We picked up 4 people on a shared charter this morning. We started off catching some baitfish to use later. After baitfishing we went trolling. We caught one kingfish within 5 minutes then went a little while before catching 2 kingfish at the same time. After that we decided to try a baitfish on one of the many artificial reefs that are out there. The first wreck we tried didn’t produce more than a nervous bait. We wound the bait up to try the next spot. On our way there I talked to one of the other boats and he told me that he got a bite on that wreck but hadn’t got the fish up yet. We set up on the next wreck but didn’t get a bite right away. We drifted slowly over the structure and when we were almost past the wreck the rod tip bounced pretty hard. The rod didn’t bend over right away so we didn’t think that the fish was still there. As we pulled away from the wreck the rod started bending and we were on. After about a 30 minute fight the fish finally “popped” to the surface. It was a large grouper. My deckhand Brian could hardly handle his excitement, this was his first “big” grouper. He has been fishing out here for a long time and never caught a grouper over about 15 pounds. Well, needless to say, everybody on the boat was pretty happy with our day so we headed back to the dock. When we got in we tried to weigh the fish on our scale but it was too heavy for a 50 pound scale. We borrowed a scale from one of the other boats and hung the fish from it. It weighed 65 pounds. Well, that’s all for now. Hope to take you fishing soon.

Fort Lauderdale Fishing Report 08/24/09

Hard to believe but we didn’t have one trip this weekend but we got out this morning. We caught a few live baits but they weren’t biting good so we moved on to trolling. We caught a couple of bonito as soon as we got the baits out, then we got a few barracuda, then some kingfish. We missed a few fish but had more than a normal amount of cut offs. After catching some fish we decided to try for a shark but no luck with that so we headed back to the dock.

Fort Lauderdale Fishing Report 08/21/09

No trips for the past couple of days but we had an all day today. We started the trip catching live ballyhoo and speedos. Then we went to where we wanted to be and put them out. We caught a couple of kingfish on the downrigger bait, two bonito and jumped off a sailfish. As we were fighting the bonito another one came up with it so we wound one of the rigger baits in and the other one ate it. We ran out of speedos so we decided to troll for more kingfish. It took less than an hour of trolling to fill our limit of kingfish and we still had some time left so we tried some snapper fishing. We caught some yellowtail snapper and missed a few more before heading in.

Fort Lauderdale Fishing Report 08/17/09

We had six people from Venezuela on an afternoon trip today. As soon as we got the baits in the water we got bites. We missed a lot of fish and had one get eaten off by something. We ended the trip a little early because the younger ones were not feeling good but we did manage to get three kingfish in the boat.
