Fort Lauderdale fishing has been as hot as the weather this August. Anglers fishing with me aboard the Reel Work have caught sailfish, shark, horse eye jack and some big amberjack.

Hot Summer Fishing Continues

I has been a great summer for Fort Lauderdale fishing charters and the last week has been no exception. All summer long we have been catching big kingfish and wahoo along with blackfin tuna, bonito, mahi, some sharks and even a few sailfish. Over the last week we added amberjack and baracuda to the list.

Last Friday we had a good day catching some nice sized mahi, some kingfish and a wahoo.

On Tuesdays charter a lucky angler managed to pull a large amberjack off an offshore wreck. Wednesday was another fun day.

Two young anglers had a day they won’t soon forget catching a wahoo, a nice mahi and several baracuda.

As the days grow shorter the fishing will heat up even further. Fill in the form on the left side of this page or give us a call to set up your Fort Lauderdale fishing charter.

Ft. Lauderdale, Florida Amberjack
Catch Ft. Lauderdale Amberjack

I came across an article today about how to catch amberjack on spinning tackle by Alan Peirce of the FWC. Alan says he has only tried this technique in the Florida Panhandle, but I can tell you from experience that it works just as well in the Atlantic off Fort Lauderdale.

Greater amberjack are an offshore species found near reefs, debris, and wrecks. They are the largest of the jacks. The state record was 142 lb and was caught near Islamorada. They are one of the strongest, hardest fighting fish in the sea. There is no closed season for amberjack on the Atlantic side of the state. The minimum size limit is 28 inches fork length. AJ’s are usually found in schools so if you catch one you can usually catch several more.

Alan’s technique starts by locating a school of AJ’s around a reef, wreck or drop off in 65+ feet of water. Once you locate fish drop frisky pinfish, grunts or blue runners halfway to the bottom on a grouper rod spooled with 60 – 8- lb test line. AJ’s are considered a reef fish so you must use non stainless steel circle hooks when using live bait.

Once you have gotten the AJ’s into a feeding mood with the live bait break out some heavy duty spinning or bait-casting rods spooled with 17 – 30 lb test line. These rods should be rigged with 40 – 50-pound mono leader and the biggest, brightest top-water chugger plug you can find. You should replace the treble hooks on these plugs with single hooks and bend the barbs down to make releasing the fish easier on you and the fish.

Cast the plug out and drag it back quickly making sure it makes a lot of commotion. Hold on tight because the AJ’s will explode on the plug. They are not as fast as a wahoo or king mackerel but they are one of the hardest fighting fish and have been known to break both tackle and fishermen.

Amberjack Season Opens In Gulf August 1

Amberjack

Recreational harvest of greater amberjack will open in state and federal waters of the Gulf of Mexico August 1, 2012. Recreational anglers may take one fish per person, per day with a minimum size of 30″ fork length. Reef fish gear rules apply which means anglers must use circle hooks, have a dehooking device and a venting tool on their vessel.

Ft Lauderdale Fishing Charters

Houndfish

Spring is always a great time of year to go on a Ft. Lauderdale fishing charter. This year is no exception. Anglers fishing with us aboard the Reel Work have been catching a nice variety of deep sea fish including kingmackerel, mahi-mahi (dolphin fish), blackfin tuna, shark, bonita, cobia, amberjack and some hard fighting sailfish.

Our report starts on Wednesday, the 4th of April. Anglers on this Ft Lauderdale fishing charter had a pretty good day catching some bonito, tuna, kingfish, snapper, and mahi. Heard a few sailfish and shark caught as well.
The next Saturday we had an interesting catch. A big Houndfish ate one of our baits. Our anglers also got kingfish and mahi.
The following Tuesday we caught some kingfish, tuna, and mahi-mahi.
The sailfish showed back up the next Friday. One of our clients caught a nice sailfish along with some mahi-mahi and kingfish.
This last Sunday we caught another nice sailfish and a bunch of mahi.

Now is a great time to book your Fort Lauderdale deep sea fishing charter.

Fort Lauderdale deep sea fishing has ben very good for the last couple of weeks. Anglers fishing with me aboard the Reel Work have been catching mahi-mahi, blackfin tuna, sailfish, amberjack, tilefish, bonita and crevalle jacks. There have also been plenty of kingfish, wahoo and sharks being caught.

Monday of last week started off strong. A morning fishing charter produced mahi-mahi, tuna, and tile fish. Another morning charter on Wednesday produced some big amberjack. Our anglers had a couple more AJ’s eaten by sharks. The weather was rough for Thursday’s trip but we managed to hook up with some mahi and a jack in the morning and a couple more jack in the afternoon. Tuesday was a greate day for dolphin. Anglers fishing with me landed a bunch of mahi. Look for fishing to get even better as the weather warms up.
