Atlantic Snapper Rules

Snapper are one the most abundant, and tastiest fish found in Florida’s waters. This has made them a favorite target for many Florida fishermen. There popularity has led the FWC and the SAFMC to create strict fishing regulations for snapper in state and federal waters. Here is a rundown of fishing regulations governing snapper in Southeast Florida.

Gear Rules
Circle Hooks- Vessels fishing for reef fish in Atlantic federal waters north of 28° latitude (near Melbourne) to use non-stainless steel circle hooks when fishing with natural baits.
Dehooking Device- Vessels fishing for reef fish in federal waters of the Atlantic, are required to possess and use a dehooking device.
Venting Tool- Nor required in Atlantic waters, but a good idea.

red snapper
Red Snapper:
State Waters- No Closed Season, 20″ Minimum Size Limit
Federal Waters- The recreational and commercial harvest of red snapper in Atlantic federal waters is prohibited.

Vermilion Snapper
Vermilion Snapper:
State and Federal Atlantic Waters- Closed Season November 1-March 31, 12″ Minimum Size Limit, 5 Per Harvester Per Day.
Note: Not Included In Snapper Aggregate Bag Limit.

Captain and crew of for-hire vessels are prohibited from keeping vermilion snapper.

Cubera Snapper
Cubera Snapper:
State Waters- No Closed Season, 12″ Minimum Size Limit, May posess no more than 2 Cubera Snapper over 30″ per harvester or vessel per day, whichever is less. 30″ or larger fish not included within the Snapper aggregate bag limit. Fish Under 30″ Are Included within 10 per harvester/per day Snapper aggregate.

Gray (Mangrove) Snapper
Gray (Mangrove) Snapper:
No Closed Season, 10″ Minimum Size Limit, 5 per harvester/per day, Included within 10 per harvester/per day Snapper aggregate.

Lane Snapper
Lane Snapper:
No Closed Season, 8″ Minimum Size Limit, Included within 10 per harvester/per day Snapper aggregate.

Mutton Snapper
Mutton Snapper: No Closed Season, 16″ Size Limit, Included within 10 per harvester/per day Snapper aggregate

Shcoolmaster Snapper
Shcoolmaster Snapper (From The Smithsonian National Museum): No Closed Season, 10″ Size Limit, Included within 10 per harvester/per day Snapper aggregate.

Yellow Tail Snapper
Other Snapper- No Closed Season, 12″ Size Limit, Included within 10 per harvester/per day Snapper aggregate.
Note:Includes: Blackfin, Dog, Mahogany, Queen, Silk & Yellowtail.

Harvest and retention of queen snapper and silk snapper beyond 240 feet in federal waters of the South Atlantic is prohibited.
